Malappuram is a city of Kerala. It is also the administrative district and headquarters of Malappuram district. It is located 50 km away from Kozhikode, 90 km away from Palakkad and 140 km away from Coimbatore. The meaning of the name "Malappuram" is "terraced place atop the hills" or "hilltop". Malayalam, Hindi and English are some of the major languages spoken in the city, and minority of natives also speak Tamil and Arabic. The population of the city is dominated by Muslims and Hindus, and Christians make the minority group in the city. Malappuram city also houses significant number of Tamils who have migrated to the city from other regions of the country to work as labourers or construction workers.
Malappuram is famous for being the only and first municipal body of the country that has won ISO 9001-2008 certification for quality management. The city also has many hospitals like District Homeopathic hospital, Government Medical College, Orchid Institute of Health Care & Research, Govt. Taluk Hospital, MB Hospital, Christian Mission Hospital etc.
Climate & Geography
Located in the mid land area of Kerala, Malappuram is overwhelmed with beautiful mountains, fresh water streams and lush greenery. The main river of the state, Kadalundi Puzha also flows around Malappuram. The climate of the city is mild hot and humid. The best time to make visit to the city is during September to March as during these months the weather is very delightful. The South West Monsoon brings heavy rainfall in city.
Transportation
Malappuram is well-connected by airways, railways and road ways. There are three main railway stations to tread to the city and the Karipur International Airport is located 25 km away from the city.
Bike: One can opt for bike rentals to explore the city in the most convenient manner. The paid parking system can also be leveraged.
Metro: There are plans to build a Malappuram Metro Rail mass transit system in the city that would make it easy for the passengers to reach various places in the city with ease.
Shopping & Entertainment
One must not leave the city without purchasing any stone sculptures, which would make for interesting souvenirs. Made by the local sculptors, the sculptures can be bought at very less prices from the small side roads. One can also make visit to art galleries and cinema halls while in the city.
