Nagapattinam or Nagapatnam is a town located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This town came into existence between the 9th-12th centuries during the rule of the Cholas. The name of this town was derived from the inhabitants that arrived here from Sri Lanka and settled down. Originally, the town was called Nagai and Pattinam was added later on when the Cholas ruled the kingdom.
Nagapattinam lies on the shores of the enormous Bay of Bengal. It unfolds over an entire area of 2000 sq. km. Since Nagapattinam is located close to the Bay of Bengal, it has a tropical monsoon climate. The median mercury level during the summer scales at 37°C and falls down at 22°C on an average during the winters. It receives a heavy amount of rainfall with an annual average of 3500 mm.
Nagapattinam houses numerous attractions that can be visited. Nagore Minaret, Kayarohanaswami Temple, Soundarayarajaperumala Temple, The church of Velakanni and much more draw the tourists on a large scale.
