One of the four sites in Chota Char Dham circuit, Gangotri is situated at an altitude of 3100 meters in the Himalayan range. It is a Hindu pilgrim town on the banks of river Bagirathi. The city is cuddled into the heart of Uttarkashi district of Uttrakhand and in a close proximity to the Indo-Tibetan border. Gangotri is reckoned as adobe of goddess Ganga and is a small town around the Gangotri Temple.
According to Hindu mythology, Gangotri is the place where river Ganga descended from heaven when lord Shiva released the mighty river from his luscious locks. Gangotri is the home of many ashrams, shirnes and temples. The city is also the starting point for some treks route like Tapovan, Bhojwasa, Gaumukh, Gangotri Glacier, Gangotri National Park, Shivling Peak, etc. Some of the tourist attractions in and around the place are Dodi Tal, Kerdartal, Bhagirathi Shila, Pandava Gufa, Bhairon Ghati, etc. So, if you want to enjoy captivating scenery and take a holy dip in the water, plan your visit to Gangotri between April to June or September to November as the temperature remains pleasantly cool.
