Uttarkashi is a town in Uttarakhand. It rests on the banks of River Bhagirathi-the holiest river in Hinduism. The river passes through different areas and feeds the vegetation. Uttarkashi was formed in 1960s and resembles the original Kashi (Varanasi) as both, Kashi & Uttarkashi are situated on the banks of river Ganga.
Uttarkashi has lush green surroundings and is beckoned by the lower hill ranges of Himalayas. Since it is elevated at 4,436 feet, most of the terrains are hilly. A number of tributaries of Ganges are present in Uttarkashi and are known as jad ganga & asi ganga. The temperature of Uttarkashi remains moderate amid year. The summers aren't searing but the mercury touches upto 30°-35° during the days and falls during night. The winters are chilling and temperature varies between 10°-20° during days and nights. Only the monsoon season plays negative role. Uttarkashi receives a high amount of rainfall that gives birth to flood like situations every year.
Uttarkashi is a residence to numerous Hindu temples. The prime attractions are Vishwanath temple and Kaleshwar temple where the presiding deity is Lord Shiva. The alluring temples draw hundreds of devotees. Apart from visiting the shrines, one can head towards trekking tracks and rafting for a thrilling experience.
